Safe On Any Shore with NOAA and Ocean Today

Take Ten - Protect Yourself to Save Others

Fast Facts

  • Waves are most commonly caused by wind. Wind-driven waves, or surface waves, are created by the friction between wind and surface water. As wind blows across the surface of the ocean, the continual disturbance creates a wave crest. These types of waves are found globally across the open ocean and along the coast.
  • The best way to always be wave safe is to choose guarded beaches. Lifeguards are trained to help if you get in trouble. They are also the best source of information about beach conditions and hazards.
  • You should arrive at the beach well-informed about the local weather, surf, and tide forecasts for the beach you are visiting. Don’t assume you know the beach conditions just because you regularly visit a certain beach. Always stay alert to changing weather, waves, and tides.
  • Protect yourself to save others so you don't become the second victim. When you see someone else in trouble, and before you act, stay calm and make a plan.

Knowing Is Not Enough

When you visit the beach you need to know about the hazards you may face. But staying aware and alert is what will keep you safe in the dynamic conditions on every beach.
